Active ingredient:
Nifedipine 30mg per prolonged-release tablet
Mechanism of action:
Nifedipine is a calcium antagonist that relaxes and dilates the arteries, lowering blood pressure and improving blood supply to the heart. This leads to reduced frequency and severity of angina attacks and decreased strain on the cardiovascular system.
Indications
Hypertension: Adalat LA helps to lower high blood pressure, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Chronic stable angina: It is used either alone or in combination with beta-blockers to prevent angina symptoms by increasing oxygen delivery to the heart.
Dosage and Administration Prolonged-release:
The tablet allows gradual absorption, providing stable blood pressure control throughout the day .
Typical dosing:
Varies depending on severity and tolerance. In Kenya, long-acting nifedipine (Adalat LA) is generally administered in doses ranging from 10mg to 40mg daily, sometimes once daily for prolonged-release forms .Patients switching from other calcium channel blockers (like diltiazem or verapamil) can safely be transferred to Adalat LA without losing anti-anginal efficacy
